Magical Beginnings, Enchanted Lives by Deepak Chopra

Magical Beginnings, Enchanted Lives-Holistic Guide to Pregnancy and childbirth by Deepak Chopra, M.D., David Simon, M.D., and Vicki Abrams, C.C.E..

One of the most beautiful, important books ever written for any mother, father and especially for those that one-day will be. It was written in 2005. I wish it had been written in the 80’s for my pregnancies.

Ayurveda is a 5,000-year-old system of natural medicines with its origins in Ancient India. This book shows how the Ayurveda ancient wisdoms relate to the body of a woman when she is thinking about conceiving, pregnant and a new mother. Embers of consciousness are present in every living cell. These embers are as follows: Agni-flame of awareness, Prana-essential vital force, Ojas-biological integrity (fire, breathe and earth). These are the essential building blocks of life.

Magical Beginnings is a celebration of birth”. They write, “This is not simply a book about fetal health, for we believe that the knowledge provided can improve the health of society at large.”

This book is full of well-written details with the spiritual always nearby. Every sentence sings. Here’s an example. “When the blastocyst arrives, its outer layers are able to snuggle into the lush inner lining of the uterus. This begins the process of the embryonic baby tapping into Mother to nourish his body, mind, and soul. As many parents discover, it is not uncommon for this process to continue for decades to follow.”

Another example is on page 25. “We can only marvel at the intelligence that underlies the development of a complex human being from a cluster of apparently identical cells. Where are the laws written that govern this dance of life?”

The end of every chapter has these wonderful exercises like visualizations, eating with awareness, journaling, and drawing.

The book describe yoga postures for pregnancy and their benefits. Another chapter describes discomforts and what helps. The book show pregnant women how to get more of a your needs met through productive communication. There is a chapter dedicated to fathers that every father should read.

My criticism of this book is very slight. The Cervical Dilation Chart on page 188 is incorrect. It is not at proper scale, something that possibly happened in printing.

I do not teach stretching of the perineum as shown in Chapter 2.  The woman’s body is designed to stretch. This exercise puts in the consciousness that we need to fix this part of the body. Doing this exercise will have the women thinking I want to avoid tearing. Not a pleasant or productive thought. Throughout my years of assisting at births I never saw more than skid marks (tiny tears) and this was rare. Innate birth positions and not rushing nature make all the difference.

The authors suggest you keep positive thought. They site a study that says visual experiences evoke chemical responses throughout the body that can uplift or depress us. Pictures of violence suppress the immune system where as pictures of compassionate acts enhance the immune system.

Read enchanting things to your child from conception. The thought moves through us to them and continues on its path. Make as many positive thoughts as possible.

I will end with how they begin. “To the children of humanity, whose innocent hands hold the future of our world”
